Abstract

|
Among Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. breve, B. catenulatum, B. gallicium, B. infantis, and B. longum, cell wall preparation (CWP) from B. bifidum showed the highest bone marrow cell proliferation activity through Peyer¢¥s patch in vitro. Immunological activities and cytokine productions of orally administered CWP from B. bifidum were assessed. Oral administration of CWP significantly stimulated activation of macrophages (1.6-fold of control at 0.1g/§¸ BW/day), and bone marrow cell proliferating activity (1.7-fold of control at 0.2g/§¸ BW/day). Contents of IL-6 and GM-CSF, hematopoietic growth factors, in culture supernatant of macrophages and Peyer¢¥s patch cells from mice fed CWP at 0.1 and 0.2 g/§¸ BW/day, respectively, increased in comparison with those from control (1.4-and 1.5-fold of control, respectively). Oral adminstration of CWP from B. bifidum may modulate IL-6 production to induce activation of macrophage, and enhance secretion of GM-CSF and IL-6 from Peyer¢¥s patch cells.
